Pedro de la Rosa Believes Lance Stroll Has “Definitely” Been Faster Than Fernando Alonso

Lance Stroll’s impressive performances in the latter stages of the 2023 Formula One season have challenged the perception of Fernando Alonso’s dominance over the Canadian driver, according to former F1 driver and Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa.

De la Rosa, who has closely observed both Stroll and Alonso’s performances throughout the season, expressed his admiration for Stroll’s recent surge in form. “He has been flying the last few races,” de la Rosa stated on the F1 Nation podcast following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “And some races definitely faster than Fernando. And this has impressed me from Lance. His capacity really to improve, to learn and to grow stronger. And today was an example of that, he qualified P13, he finished P10, and he was catching the group in front, so it was a strong finish, definitely.”

Stroll’s late-season resurgence was particularly evident in the final five races of the 2023 season, where he managed to score points in four of them, including back-to-back fifth-place finishes in Brazil and Las Vegas. These performances, combined with his overall improvement throughout the year, suggest that Stroll is a driver who is constantly evolving and refining his skills.

De la Rosa’s perspective aligns with that of 1996 Formula One World Champion Damon Hill, who also praised Stroll’s resilience and determination. Hill commended Stroll’s ability to overcome the broken bones he suffered in a pre-season cycling accident to compete in the season opener, highlighting his mental fortitude and unwavering commitment to the sport.

“He has actually shown some real mettle this season,” Hill remarked. “I get the feeling that he needs to find a cause or purpose, a real reason to want to drag that thing out of yourself.”

As Lance Stroll gears up for the 2024 Formula One season, he carries the momentum of his impressive late-season performances. The dynamic between Stroll and Alonso at Aston Martin is sure to be an intriguing storyline to follow next season, as Stroll aims to further establish himself as a top-tier Formula One driver.
